John C. Tidball, 1825-1906, was a Lieutenant, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; accompanied Lt. A.W. Whipple on the survey for a railroad route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean in 1853-1854. This collection includes a diary kept while on survey for railroad route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean in 1853-1854; covers period from Jan. 3-Feb. 20, 1854. Accompanied by a typescript and photocopy of the diary and Tidball's personal copy, presented by Whipple, of Vol. 3 of the published Report, annotated by Tidball.
