Hamlet: a Tragedy in Five Acts

Edward Hugh Sothern (1859-1933) was an American actor who was widely popular for his roles in romantic comedy and was also noted for his performances in Shakespearean plays.

This production of Hamlet, with Sothern in the title role, was first presented at the Garden Theatre, New York on September 17, 1900. Also included in the cast are William Harris, Arthur R. Lawrence, Charlotte Deane, and Virginia Harned.

The collection includes an original typescript, with handwritten notes, of Edward Hugh Sothern's acting version of Hamlet. Notations include stage manager's cues and floorplans. Included on the title page of each act is the statement, "This manuscript is the property of E.H. Sothern, Daly's Theatre, New York City." Act five is missing from the collection.
