John Gregory Bourke (1846-96) was a U.S. soldier, author, and ethnologist. This collection contains the holograph journal Bourke kept while he was serving as a lieutenant of the 3rd cavalry in the U.S. Army, which includes sketches and a descriptive index prepared by James Officer. In his journal, Bourke describes visits to the Bannock people, Zuni, Navajo, and Sioux villages, and various western military forts from May to June of 1881.
