University of Arizona scholars explore rare books held by Special Collections in this annual lecture series started by Dr. Albrecht Classen, University Distinguished Professor of German Studies.
Speaker: Cynthia White
Medieval Latin bestiaries—books filled with allegorical animal stories and some of the most beautiful illustrations in the history of art—are a mystery: their genealogy, their images, their short and carefully circumscribed period of production, their very premise. Their animal stories, like those of the hedgehog and the fox, invite us to experience the natural world as understood (and sometimes misunderstood) in the Middle Ages and to find ourselves among the interpretations of these creatures.
