Letter of Jose Romero

Cover Page of a Letter to Mariano De Urrea

Jose Romero was a Lieutenant Colonel in Sonora, Mexico and was leader of the 1823-1826 expeditions to establish an inland route between Sonora and California. The collection contains a photocopy of a letter to Mariana de Urrea, Comandante General de Sonora, from Romero in San Gabriel, CA. The letter recounts his experiences in attempting unsuccessfully to return to Sonora in the winter of 1823-1824 through the Palm Springs area, and describing the mail route between Tucson and San Gabriel which was conducted by Jose Cocomaricopa, the bearer of this letter, via the Colorado River route.
