The collection contains typescript chapters of the story Nine Shots in the Dark, proposed by bookseller Eugene Steinheimer and written in relay by Erskine Caldwell, Rosemary Taylor, Leslie Ernenwein, Joseph Wood Krutch, Roy Chapman Andrews, Ruth Suckow, Nelson C. Nye, Ann Ritner, and Elliot Arnold. Published serially in the Arizona Daily Star, March 28 to April 5, 1951, as a promotion for the first annual Tucson Festival of the Arts.
