Description

As with many borders, conflicts arise. Ownership of the El Chamizal tract, consisting of 630 acres of disputed land between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, remained in dispute for nearly a hundred years. The issue involved the interpretation of how fast the river changed its course in relationship to the original channel line defined by treaty. The solution in 1963 provided for the relocation and redefinition of the boundary in this area, and for the final determination of the river's course. Within the urban areas, the river channel was lined with concrete, preventing further erosion and political complications. In this site near the Quitman Mountains east of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, gravel has been added to control river-bank erosion.
